Google Business Profile Setup for Oklahoma City Service Businesses

For most local service businesses, the Google Business Profile does more for lead generation than the website does. It's also the thing most often set up incorrectly — and a misconfigured profile can be suspended, which takes weeks to unwind.

If you run a plumbing company, a cleaning service, a contracting outfit, a mobile repair business, or an agency out of a home office, this one is for you.

You're a "service-area business"

Google sorts local businesses into two buckets.

Storefronts have a location customers visit. Restaurants, salons, retail shops.

Service-area businesses go to the customer, or work from a location the public doesn't visit. Plumbers, electricians, landscapers, home-based consultants.

The rules differ, and applying storefront rules to a service business is where suspensions come from.

The rule that trips everyone up

If customers don't come to your address, your address should not be displayed on your profile.

That feels backwards. It isn't. Google's guidelines specifically use a home-based service business as the example of when to clear the address and define a service area instead.

Here's the part that makes it workable: you can enter your home address for verification purposes, then hide it. Once hidden, it isn't publicly visible anywhere. You get verified, you get the listing, and your home address stays private.

Do not use a mailbox address

This is the single most common way local businesses get suspended.

Using a mailbox rental, a virtual office you don't actually work from, or any address where nobody is present during your posted hours violates Google's guidelines. Google's eligibility rules exclude businesses whose listed address is a P.O. box or a mailbox in a remote location.

The reason is spam. Fake listings built on mailbox addresses were a real problem, so the enforcement is aggressive. A hidden home address is safer than a mail drop, every time.

Setting it up correctly

1. Claim or create the profile. Search your business name on Google and look for the option to claim it, or create one at the Business Profile site.

2. Enter your real operating address for verification, then select the option indicating you serve customers at their locations, and clear the address from display.

3. Define your service areas. You can add up to 20. For an OKC metro business, that might be Oklahoma City, Edmond, Norman, Moore, Yukon, Mustang, Midwest City, Del City, Bethany, and outward from there. Only list places you'd genuinely travel to.

4. Choose the most specific primary category available. "Plumber" beats "Contractor." Then add secondary categories for the rest.

5. Fill in everything else. Hours, services with descriptions, service area, phone, website. Blank fields are missed ranking opportunities.

6. Add real photos. Your work, your team, your vehicles. Stock photography is transparent and does nothing for you.

One profile only

Creating separate listings for each city you serve is a spam tactic and will get all of them suspended. One business location, one profile, with service areas defined. There is no exception for "but we really do work in Norman."

Reviews are the ranking lever

Once you're set up correctly, reviews do most of the remaining work. Ask every satisfied customer. Make it easy — text them the link. Respond to every review, including the bad ones, professionally.

Reviews that mention your service and your city are especially valuable. You can't script that, but you can ask people what specifically they found helpful.

Post regularly

Google Posts show up on your profile and signal that the business is active. Weekly is plenty. A completed job, a seasonal offer, a common question answered.

If you open a real office later

When you have a location you actually work from and can receive customers at during posted hours, you can list that address. Until then, run it as a service-area business.

Start the profile now regardless. Review count and profile age accumulate over time, and both carry forward. Waiting six months to start means starting six months behind.
